AOP Côtes de Roussillon Villages

Winemaker notes

Soils are iron-rich red clay, with limestone and schist. The red clay soils contributes to the enhanced spiciness of the Syrah. The proximity to the Mediterranean allows the late-ripening Mourvèdre to achieve its true phenolic potential.

Viticultural Notes

Grapes are sourced form selected parcels in the Côtes de Roussillon Villages of Latour de France and Caramany, along the Arly river valley. Some of the family's grenache vines date back to 1909, while the majority are 50+ years of age. The inland position of the vineyards creates a slightly more continental-Mediterranean climate with greater variance between daytime and nighttime temperatures. Grapes are hand-harvested in upwards to 5 passes through the vineyards to ensure optimal stage of ripeness of each and every cluster.

Vintage Notes

2016 Vintage: The vintage started off slowly after a mild winter. The Roussillon was thankfully spared of the frosts that hit the near-by Languedoc and much of the rest of France. The growing season would be characterized as hotter and drier than usual. The lack of moisture resulted in smaller yields and smaller berries on each bunch. Into August, the evening temperatures were cooler than usual, keeping the acidities elevated in the grapes. The red wines from the region are rich, powerful and dense, with a remarkable amount of freshness considering the conditions. When consumed young, the wine will be dominated by plush, ripe fruit but with age the structure and acidity will allow the wine to evolve beautifully with time.

2015 Vintage: An excellent vintage overall in terms of quality and quantity. The winter and spring were mild, kick starting the growing season earlier than normal. The region's southerly latitude spared any risk of frost with the earlier bud break. Starting in May, temperatures were warm, with cooler evenings that preserved acidities, and occasional rain storms showering the region with 30 to 50mm of rain each time spared the vines from hydric stress. The tramontane wind blew normally which reduced disease pressure and cooled vineyards. Red wines have balanced tannins and acidity with aromatic lift and rich, ripe fruit concentration.
